Today was a very exciting and early morning. We woke up at about 4:30am and left for Uclulet by 5am for our fishing trip. We could tell the day was going to be interesting because about halfway there we saw a black bear running across the road. Once we had arrived at the docks and left with our guide we saw a bald eagle sitting on the shore eating something and a little further down another black bear by the waters edge. Because it was supposed to get relatively windy further out we stayed in closer to the island. Once we had found our spot Bill, our guide, set up the lines and we started trolling along. It took us a while to hook a fish but we got one and my dad had told me that the first fish on was mine, and sure enough I got the rod and started bringing him in. It was my first salmon ever and my largest fish that I had landed. I was completely thrilled that I was able to bring it in.
The rest of the fishing continued kinda slow but at one point got a double header, meaning both rods had a fish on, and my dad and I both got a decent sized fish. My second fish that I landed and was able to keep have me a bit of a struggle. He first decided he did not like the area he was in and took off towards the kelp forcing me to hang on to the rod for dear life as well as making Bill move the boat to catch up with him. When the fish finally decided to let me reel him in I had quite the job to do because he was a larger fish and also pretty strong. But at last I won the battle and landed him! He was officially the biggest fish I had ever caught and was pretty happy to have caught the biggest fish between my dad and I until my dad landed one slightly bigger… But over all it was a fabulous trip and a great experience.

Nancy says:
Glad you were able to hang on.
Did you have him for dinner?
Alpha says:
Eat your salmon!

Bill said “she played the fish better than a lot of guys he’s had on his boat who have caught salmon before and claim to know what they’re doing. She played that fish perfectly!”
Jayne’s fish was a 15lb Spring salmon. All the Springs after that were bigger. In total we boated 4 Springs, 2 hatchery coho, 1 sockeye and released a bunch of wild coho.
Chris says:
Way to go Jayne!!
