Today was our last action packed day on the sweet 16 west coast adventure. It was also our day for kayaking the broken group islands near Uclulet. Once we arrived and got all our gear together we headed off in the boat towards the islands. On the way over we had the chance to see some harbor seals sitting on a rock. As we continued we were told to keep our eyes open for any whales unfortunately on the way over we did not see any whales. Once we were at our drop off destination our guides got our kayaks off the boat and got them prepared for us and showed us how to put on all the gear. Because I was the closest to one of our guides I became the model. Part of the gear we had was this skirt that was tucked into a groove around the hole where you sit. My skirt was really tight when I tried putting it on my kayak so I needed help each time. One really cool thing was that my dad had got us both single kayaks so we could each have our own and go where ever we wanted. This was really cool but unfortunately my arms became fairly tired and I never got much of a chance to sit back an relax a bit. During our little tour we saw a lot of starfish including a bat starfish which looks like a regular one but it’s points are shorter and there is more tissue in between each. I also got to see a sunflower starfish which has more than 5 points and they are super fast… For a starfish that is. We also got the chance to see how native fishermen used the tides to fish. They would build a rock wall and during high tide they would scare the fish into their little trap and keep them there so that during low tide they would be able to go around and simply pick up all the fish. At one point we had another seal checking us out once and a while. It was really cute because all you would really see was his little head bobbing up and down in the surf. Once we had made it to our pickup spot our guides packed everything up and we headed back towards Uclulet. On the way back we were trying to spot a whale that kept coming up and as soon as we got close it would dive back down for a while and come back up farther away from us. Apparently he thought it was a pretty fun game of hide and go seek and we did not want to play, so we headed back. Now that the adventure is coming to a close I am looking forward to the next few days where I get to simply sleep and relax.
